2026 is the year the Indian EV market stopped being a handful of compact SUVs. Twelve significant launches are in the pipeline, spanning a rugged off-roader, two seven-seaters, a Maruti MPV and Hyundai's first electric sedan for India.

The five that matter most

Tata Sierra EV — ₹18.79L – ₹25.00L

The most anticipated Indian EV of the year, and the numbers justify it: 665 km claimed, 478–532 km real, 280 bhp and all-wheel drive. The Sierra name carries genuine weight with Indian buyers, and this is the first Tata to break 600 km. It goes directly at the Mahindra BE 6, which has owned this ground.

Mahindra Thar EV — ₹22.00L – ₹27.00L

The most interesting engineering exercise here. 473 km claimed, 281 bhp and all-wheel drive — and electric motors are, in principle, excellent for off-roading: instant torque and precise low-speed control. Whether the charging reality of remote trails works out is the open question, and it is a real one.

Maruti eMPV — ₹20.00L – ₹25.00L

Seven seats, 500 km claimed, and Maruti's service network, which is the largest in India by a wide margin. For families outside metro cities this may be the single most important launch of the year, regardless of what the spec sheet says.

Mahindra XUV e8 — ₹25.00L – ₹30.00L

The electric XUV700. 7 seats, 80 kWh, 320 bhp all-wheel drive and 360–400 km real range. The most substantial seven-seat EV under ₹50 lakh.

VinFast VF6 and VF7 — ₹16.49L – ₹18.29L and ₹20.89L – ₹25.49L

VinFast's India entry, with a plant in Tamil Nadu. The VF6 at 468 km claimed undercuts established rivals; the VF7 brings 348 bhp and all-wheel drive at ₹20.89L – ₹25.49L. Both are competitively specified. The unknown is service network build-out, which is where new entrants in India usually struggle.

What this year changes

Range stops being a differentiator. Several of these clear 500 km claimed at under ₹25 lakh. Two years ago that was a ₹50 lakh proposition.
Seven-seat EVs become normal. Three launches, which finally answers the most common Indian family objection.
Maruti arrives properly. Whatever the spec, Maruti's network changes the geography of who can realistically own an EV.
Body styles diversify. An off-roader, an MPV, a sedan and a hatchback, not just compact SUVs.

Should you wait?

An honest answer: usually not. There is always a better car six months out, and Indian launch timelines slip routinely. If a specific upcoming model is genuinely the only thing that fits your requirement — seven seats under ₹25 lakh, say — waiting is rational. Otherwise the cars on sale today already do the job, and you spend the waiting period paying ₹6–8 per km for petrol.
