Family car buying in India means three things in order: how many people fit, how much luggage fits, and how far it goes before you have to stop with children in the back. Electric cars have only recently started answering all three well.

Six and seven seats: the short list

Kia Carens Clavis EV — ₹17.99L – ₹24.49L

The most sensible six-seat EV in India, and by a distance the most affordable way into one. 490 km claimed, 352–392 km real, and the Carens underneath it is already a proven Indian family car. If you need six seats and a normal budget, the list is short and this is at the top of it.

Maruti eMPV — ₹20.00L – ₹25.00L

Seven seats, 500 km claimed, and Maruti's service network — which for a family car used across state lines is worth more than any single specification. Newly arrived, so real-world ownership data is still thin.

BYD M6 — ₹24.00L – ₹28.00L

Seven seats and a properly spacious third row, unlike several rivals where row three is nominal. 530 km claimed. BYD's service network in India is small, which is the reason it sits third rather than first.

Mahindra XUV e8 — ₹25.00L – ₹30.00L

Seven seats on the XUV700 body, 500 km claimed and 320 bhp with all-wheel drive. The most substantial seven-seat EV under ₹50 lakh, and the one that feels most like a large car should.

Tata Safari EV — ₹25.00L – ₹29.00L

Six seats, 505 km claimed, 25-minute fast charging and Tata's service reach. For families outside metro cities, that last point often decides it.

Five seats, but genuinely family-sized

If six seats are a want rather than a need, these are better cars:

  • Hyundai Creta Electric — ₹18.02L – ₹24.55L, 340–378 km real. The safest all-round family choice in India, with the resale record to match.
  • Maruti e Vitara — ₹17.00L – ₹22.50L, 372–413 km real, and the widest service network of any EV brand here.
  • Tata Harrier EV — ₹21.49L – ₹30.23L, 390 bhp all-wheel drive, 363–404 km real. The most capable five-seat family EV Tata makes.

What to check before you buy a family EV

  1. Boot with all seats up. On most seven-seaters, row three folded is the only usable configuration for luggage. Check with the seats where you will actually use them.
  2. Real range, not claimed. A family car carries five people and luggage, and runs the air conditioning hard. Work from the real-world column and take the lower end.
  3. ISOFIX points and rear-seat width. Two child seats plus an adult across a bench is a common Indian requirement and not every EV manages it.
  4. Charging speed. With children aboard, the difference between a 20-minute and a 55-minute stop is not academic.
  5. Service reach on your route. Family cars go to grandparents' towns. Check the brand's EV service coverage there, not just in your city.
