Which tool answers which question

Six tools sounds like a lot until you realise that buying an EV in India is really six separate decisions, and most buyers get stuck on a different one. Here is what each tool is actually for, and — just as usefully — what it will not tell you.

“Will an EV actually save me money?”

Start with the EV vs petrol running-cost calculator. Enter your monthly running and your electricity tariff and it returns cost per kilometre for both. The number that surprises people is the gap: home charging at around ₹8 a unit typically lands an electric car near ₹1 per kilometre against roughly ₹5 for an equivalent petrol car. What the calculator does not model is the purchase premium — an EV usually costs more upfront, and the running-cost saving is what pays that back over time. Divide the price difference by your annual saving and you have your real break-even.

“Which EV suits me?”

The EV finder asks four questions — vehicle type, budget, how you drive, body style — and returns a shortlist of three rather than a single winner, because below about fifteen lakh the decision is usually settled by charging access and service reach rather than by specifications.

“This one or that one?”

The side-by-side comparison tool puts two vehicles against each other on battery capacity, claimed range, DC fast-charging time and price. Charging time is the spec most buyers skip and most regret skipping: among cars on sale today, 10–80% DC times run from about 20 minutes to an hour, and a few models have no DC fast charging at all.

“Can I do this trip?”

The trip planner takes a route and a vehicle and estimates whether it is a straight run or a charging stop. It works off realistic range rather than claimed range — roughly 72–80% of the brochure figure, for the reasons set out in how we estimate real-world range. Highway speeds and air conditioning both push you toward the lower end of that band, so plan a trip on the pessimistic number and treat anything better as a bonus.

“Where will I charge?”

The charging station finder maps public charge points by city, across the main Indian networks. Use it before you buy, not after. The honest test is not how many chargers exist in your city but whether there is a working one on the routes you drive weekly — and, more important still, whether you can put a charge point in your own parking slot.

“What will the government knock off?”

The state subsidy guide covers what each state offers, because EV incentives in India are state subjects and differ sharply. Road tax and registration waivers are often worth more than the headline subsidy and are easier to overlook.

Where the numbers come from

Every tool on this site runs on the same vehicle database: prices are ex-showroom and shown as a variant range, battery capacity is usable or gross as published by the manufacturer, and range is the claimed or certified figure, never our own test result. We do not road-test vehicles and we do not pretend to. Where we convert a claimed figure into a realistic one — in the trip planner and the running-cost calculator — the conversion is labelled as an estimate and the method is published. Our editorial policy sets out what we will and will not publish.

Are the tools free?

Yes, all of them, with no sign-up. The site is funded by display advertising, which has no influence on what any tool returns.

How current are the prices?

We update prices as revisions are confirmed. Because manufacturers change prices without notice and dealer-level offers vary, always confirm the final figure with a dealer before you commit.

Why do your range numbers differ from the brochure?

They do not — we publish the claimed figure as the claimed figure. Where a tool needs a usable number, such as the trip planner, it applies a clearly labelled real-world estimate instead.

Do you recommend specific dealers?

No. We have no dealer relationships and take no commission on sales.
