EV maintenance cost in India (2026): what you will really spend
The maintenance saving on an electric car is the part of EV ownership that is under-sold, because it is less dramatic than the fuel saving and harder to put on a poster. It is also more certain: it does not depend on electricity tariffs, driving style or whether you can charge at home.
What an EV does not have
An electric drivetrain removes most of what a service centre normally charges you for:
- Engine oil and oil filter — the single biggest recurring service item on a petrol car
- Air filter and fuel filter
- Spark plugs
- Timing belt or chain
- Clutch and gearbox oil
- Exhaust system, catalytic converter, silencer
- Radiator and engine coolant system in its conventional form
What remains is tyres, brake fluid, cabin air filter, battery coolant, wiper blades, suspension components and 12V auxiliary battery. That is a short list, and most of it is cheap.

Roughly 60–70% lower, which matches what Indian EV owners consistently report. The gap widens with age, because petrol cars start needing the expensive items — clutch, belts, exhaust — exactly when an EV still needs nothing.
Where EVs cost more
Tyres. The real one. EVs are heavier and deliver instant torque, so front tyres wear faster — expect replacement every 30,000–40,000 km against 45,000–50,000 on a petrol car. Many EVs also use specific low-rolling-resistance tyres that cost more.
Insurance. Typically 10–20% higher premiums, because the vehicle value is higher and battery damage claims are expensive. Partly offset by the IRDAI discount on EV third-party premiums.
Out-of-warranty repairs. Fewer things break, but what does break needs a trained technician and a proprietary part. Outside metros this can mean waiting.
Brakes last much longer
Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so friction brakes see far less use. Pads that would last 40,000 km on a petrol car routinely go 80,000–100,000 km on an EV. The counter-intuitive maintenance item is that brakes can seize from underuse in humid conditions — use them firmly now and then, and have the calipers cleaned at service.
The battery, which is what everyone actually asks about
Indian manufacturers warrant the pack for eight years or 160,000 km. Large-fleet data suggests modern packs retain roughly 85–90% capacity at that point. That is gradual range loss, not a failure — budget for slightly shorter range in year eight rather than a replacement bill.
Out-of-warranty replacement is expensive, but it is also rare enough that treating it as an expected cost distorts the maths. Treat it the way you treat an engine rebuild on a petrol car: possible, uncommon, not in the five-year budget.
