A practical checklist for buying a second-hand EV in India — how to check battery health and warranty transfer, spot flood damage, and get the paperwork right.

Why used EVs can be great value — with one big caveat

Electric cars in India currently depreciate faster than petrol cars, which means a two- or three-year-old EV can be genuinely good value. But almost the entire risk sits in one component — the battery. Get that check right and a used EV is a smart buy; skip it and you could inherit an expensive problem.

The battery: check this first

  • State of Health (SoH): ask the seller or a service centre for the battery health reading. A healthy pack after a few years should still hold most of its original capacity.
  • Real range test: charge to full and see the indicated range; compare it against the model’s original figure. A large drop is a red flag.
  • Remaining warranty: most EV batteries carry an 8-year warranty. Confirm how many years/kilometres are left and whether it transfers to you as the second owner.

Beyond the battery

  • Flood / water history: water damage is serious on an EV. Check service records and look for corrosion or damp smells.
  • Service history & software: confirm the car received its scheduled checks and is on the latest software.
  • Tyres, brakes, suspension: EVs are heavy, so tyres wear faster; regenerative braking means brake pads often last longer — uneven wear is worth questioning.
  • Charging kit: make sure the original portable charger and cables are included — replacements are costly.

The test drive checklist

  • No warning lights on the dash after start-up.
  • Smooth acceleration and regen; no unusual noises.
  • Try a real charge (AC, and DC fast if possible) to confirm charging works on both.
  • Check all screens, infotainment and connected features respond.

Paperwork

Ensure a clean RC transfer, valid insurance (transfer or fresh policy in your name), a clear loan/hypothecation status, and that the battery warranty is documented in your name where transferable.

One-line rule: a used EV is only as good as its battery. Insist on a battery health check and confirm the transferable warranty before you pay — everything else is secondary.
