Comparing electric and CNG cars in India

CNG has been India's budget-running-cost answer for two decades, and it is a good one. The EV question is whether the newer technology beats it — and on cost per kilometre it does, clearly, with one large asterisk.

The headline: home-charged EV is roughly a third the cost of CNG per kilometre. But an EV run entirely on public DC charging costs about the same as CNG — and CNG refuels faster. That is the asterisk, and it is the whole decision.

What CNG does better

Refuelling speed. Five to ten minutes at the pump, versus hours at home or up to an hour on DC. The CNG queue is real in Delhi and Mumbai, but it is still faster than charging.

No home infrastructure needed. Like a hybrid, CNG asks nothing of your parking situation.

Lower purchase price. A CNG variant costs roughly ₹90,000–1 lakh over the petrol version. An EV costs ₹2–3 lakh over it.

What CNG costs you

Boot space. The cylinder eats most of it. On a hatchback this is severe — a family weekend becomes a logistics exercise. This is the objection most CNG owners actually voice.

Performance. CNG cuts power by roughly 10–15% against the petrol version. An EV does the opposite.

Service cost. Higher than petrol, not lower — CNG runs the engine hotter and components wear faster. Against an EV's ₹2,000–5,000 a year, CNG's ₹8,000–14,000 is a real gap.

Geography. CNG availability is excellent in Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Mumbai and parts of UP, and poor in much of the south and east. Check your city before assuming.

The decision

  • Home charging + mostly city driving: EV, comfortably. Three times cheaper to run, cheaper to service, full boot.
  • No home charging + a CNG station nearby: CNG. Same running cost as public-charged EV, faster refuelling, lower purchase price.
  • Commercial or very high mileage: EV if you can charge at your base overnight — at 3,000 km a month the saving against CNG is roughly ₹6,000 monthly.
  • Long highway distances, unpredictable routes: Neither. Look at petrol or a strong hybrid.

Does a CNG car lose boot space?
Yes, substantially. The cylinder occupies most of the boot, which is a serious practical limitation on hatchbacks and compact sedans. An electric car keeps its full boot and often gains additional storage.
Is CNG service cheaper than EV service?
No. CNG running costs Rs 8,000-14,000 a year in service against Rs 2,000-5,000 for an EV, because CNG combustion runs hotter and wears engine components faster. CNG service also costs more than petrol service, not less.
Which is better for a taxi or commercial vehicle?
An EV, if you can charge at your base overnight. At around 3,000 km a month, home or depot charging saves roughly Rs 6,000 a month against CNG, plus a large service saving. Without depot charging, CNG remains competitive.
Is CNG available everywhere in India?
No. Coverage is strong in Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Mumbai and parts of Uttar Pradesh, and thin across much of southern and eastern India. Check station density in your city before choosing CNG.
