12 EV myths in India, busted with facts

Most objections to electric cars in India are recycled from around 2019 and were only partly true then. Here are the twelve that come up most, and what the current numbers actually say.

1. "The battery dies in three to five years"

No. Indian manufacturers warrant packs for eight years or 160,000 km, and large-fleet data suggests modern batteries retain roughly 85–90% of capacity at that point. What you get is gradual range loss, not failure. A three-year-old EV in India today typically shows a few percent degradation, not a dead pack.

2. "Replacing the battery costs more than the car"

Replacement is expensive, and it is also rare. It sits outside the eight-year warranty window for almost every owner, and packs are increasingly repaired at module level rather than swapped whole. Treat it like an engine rebuild on a petrol car — possible, uncommon, not a five-year budget line.

3. "You cannot drive an EV in rain or flooded roads"

Backwards, if anything. EV battery packs are sealed to IP67, meaning dust-tight and able to withstand immersion. There is no air intake to hydrolock, which is the failure that kills petrol and diesel engines in floods. EVs are generally better in monsoon water than combustion cars — though no car of any kind should be driven through deep standing water.

4. "There is no charging infrastructure in India"

Partly outdated. Metro coverage and major highway corridors — Delhi–Jaipur, Mumbai–Pune, Bengaluru–Chennai — are genuinely usable now. Away from those, coverage is thin and reliability inconsistent. The honest version is: public charging is fine if you plan, and irrelevant if you charge at home, which is how most owners live.

5. "EVs are slow"

The Mahindra BE 6 makes 282 bhp and tops 202 km/h from ₹18.90L – ₹27.79L. Electric motors deliver full torque from zero, so EVs are quicker off the line than petrol cars costing far more. This myth died several years ago.

6. "EVs are not really green because India burns coal"

Even on India's current grid mix, lifecycle emissions per kilometre for an EV come out below a comparable petrol car, because electric drivetrains are roughly three times more efficient at converting stored energy into motion. The gap widens every year as renewable share grows. Local air quality benefit in cities is immediate and separate from the grid question.

7. "Range anxiety makes EVs impractical"

The average Indian car covers under 40 km a day. A 315 km car charged at home needs plugging in roughly weekly. Range matters for the exceptions, not the routine — and cars like the Mahindra BE 6 at 491–545 km real-world have largely removed even that.

8. "EVs are more expensive to own"

To buy, yes. To own, no. Home charging runs ₹0.90–1.30 per km against ₹6–8 for petrol, and service costs are 60–70% lower. On 1,200 km a month the total saving is roughly ₹7,000–9,000, which typically covers the price premium in three to five years.

9. "You cannot charge an EV if you live in an apartment"

Harder, not impossible. Most state EV policies and the Model Building Bye-Laws direct societies to permit installation. The practical route is a dedicated meter at your parking slot so electricity bills to you directly — that removes the RWA's actual objection, which is usually about who pays.

10. "EV batteries catch fire"

Early Indian two-wheeler fires in 2022 were real and were traced largely to poor thermal management in cheap packs. Standards tightened substantially afterwards. Per vehicle on the road, fire incidence for modern EVs is comparable to or lower than petrol vehicles — petrol car fires simply are not news.

11. "EVs have terrible resale value"

The Indian EV resale market is young and data is genuinely thin, which is a fair concern rather than a myth. Early evidence suggests brands with wide service networks hold value better, and that battery health certification matters more than odometer reading. Treat resale as the least predictable line in your calculation, not as a settled negative.

12. "Servicing an EV is difficult and expensive"

There is far less to service — no oil, filters, plugs, belts, clutch or exhaust. Annual costs run 60–70% below an equivalent petrol car. The real constraint is where: outside metros, trained EV technicians are fewer, so brand service reach matters more than it does for a petrol car.
