Home charging is what makes an electric car cheap to run — ₹0.90–1.30 per km against ₹2.60–3.60 on public DC. Getting it set up is straightforward in an independent house and a negotiation in an apartment. Both are covered here.

Do you even need a wall box?

Every EV comes with a portable charger that plugs into a 15A socket — the kind an air conditioner uses. At around 2.5–3.3 kW it adds roughly 15–25 km per hour, so an overnight charge gives 150–200 km. For most Indian driving that is enough, and it costs nothing extra.

A wall box makes sense if you drive more than about 60 km a day, have two EVs, or simply want the car full every morning regardless of when you got home.

What the installation actually involves

  1. Check your sanctioned load. A 7.2 kW charger needs headroom on your connection. If your sanctioned load is 3–4 kW, you will need an enhancement from the discom before anything else. This is the step people skip and then get stuck on.
  2. Dedicated circuit. The charger needs its own MCB or RCBO at the distribution board and its own cable run — typically 4–6 sq mm copper for 7.2 kW, sized to the run length. It must not share a circuit with anything else.
  3. Earthing. The single most important safety element, and the one most commonly done badly in Indian installations. A proper earth pit with measured resistance, not a token wire.
  4. RCD protection. Type A or Type B residual current protection, appropriate to the charger. Most quality wall boxes include it internally — confirm before buying.
  5. Mounting and weather. Wall boxes are outdoor-rated, but mounting under cover extends their life considerably in Indian conditions.
  6. Commissioning. The installer should test insulation resistance, earth continuity and RCD trip time, and give you the readings. Ask for them in writing.

Use the manufacturer's authorised installer where one exists. On most Indian EVs the first installation is included or heavily subsidised with the car, and using an outsider can affect warranty cover.

The separate EV meter — do this

Most state discoms offer a dedicated EV tariff well below the domestic slab rate, which drops running cost to roughly ₹0.65–0.90 per km. Over five years at 1,200 km a month that difference is worth substantially more than the wall box costs.

Application processes vary by state and typically take a few weeks. It usually requires proof of EV ownership, a load application and an inspection. Start it when you book the car, not after delivery.

Charging in an apartment

This is where most Indian EV buyers get stuck, and it is a society-politics problem rather than a technical one. What works:

  • Lead with the meter, not the charger. The RWA's real objection is almost always "who pays for the electricity". A dedicated meter to your slot, billed to you directly, removes it entirely.
  • Bring the policy in writing. The Model Building Bye-Laws already require EV charging provision in new buildings, and most state EV policies direct societies to permit installation. Print the relevant text.
  • Ask for a socket, not a wall box. A 15A point at your slot is far easier to get approved and is enough for overnight charging. Upgrade later once the precedent exists.
  • Offer to fund it yourself. Cost to the society is the second objection.
  • Ask the discom directly. Several state discoms will install a separate EV connection in a society parking area on request, which reframes it as a utility matter rather than a society one.

Safety, briefly

Do not charge through an extension cord or a multi-plug — EV charging draws sustained high current for hours, which is exactly the condition domestic extensions are not built for. Do not use a socket that gets warm. And have the installation checked if you notice tripping, buzzing or discoloration at the plug.
