EV Charging in India Explained: Home, Public, Fast & Costs

Charging is the part new buyers worry about most and understand least. It's simpler than it looks. Here's everything, in plain language.

The three ways you'll charge

1. Home charging (how you'll do 90% of it)

Plug into a wall-mounted AC charger (3.3–7.4 kW) overnight. A typical 40 kWh EV goes empty-to-full in 6–8 hours and costs about ₹280–350 at home tariffs. You wake up to a full "tank" every day — no fuel-station trips.

2. Public AC charging

Slower chargers at malls, offices and parking lots. Good for topping up while you're parked anyway.

3. DC fast charging

The highway hero. 30–60 kW (and up to 150 kW+) chargers take most EVs from 10% to 80% in 25–50 minutes. Costs more per unit (₹18–24) but you only use these on long trips.

How much does a full charge cost?

Simple formula: battery size (kWh) × tariff (₹/unit). A 45 kWh battery at ₹8/unit = ₹360 for ~400 km. That's roughly ₹0.90/km — versus ₹6–7/km on petrol.

Can you charge in an apartment?

Yes, increasingly. Many societies now allow a dedicated metered charging point in your parking slot; state EV policies and RERA guidance increasingly require provisions for it. If your society resists, a portable charger on a 15A plug still works (just slower).

Rule of thumb: charge at home, fast-charge only on trips. Do that and your per-km cost stays near the lowest figures — and you almost never think about charging at all.
