An electric car charging in India

Charging is the part of EV ownership people worry about before they buy and stop thinking about after. This guide covers what actually matters: the two kinds of charging, what each costs, and the one question that decides whether an EV suits you.

AC and DC, in one paragraph

Batteries store DC. AC charging sends alternating current to the car, and the car's onboard charger converts it — that converter is small, so AC charging is slow: 3.3 kW to 11 kW, meaning six to twelve hours for a full charge. DC fast charging does the conversion in the charger itself, which can be the size of a fridge, so it pushes 25 kW to 180 kW straight into the pack: 20 to 60 minutes for 10–80%.

You will do most of your charging on AC at home, and use DC only on long drives. That is the normal pattern and it is why home charging matters so much.

For cars the practical answer is simple: Type 2 for AC, CCS2 for DC. India standardised on these and almost everything current uses them. Two-wheelers are the messy exception — most brands still run their own connectors and their own charging networks.

The spread between the top row and the bottom row is the entire economics of owning an EV in India. Home charging is four to eight times cheaper than petrol. Public DC charging is roughly half the price of petrol — still a saving, but not the transformative one people expect.

Charging at home

Every EV comes with a portable charger that plugs into a 15A socket — the kind an air conditioner uses. It is slow, around 3 kW, but for overnight charging that is usually enough: eight hours adds roughly 150–200 km.

A wall box at 7.2 kW roughly halves that time and costs ₹25,000–60,000 installed. Worth it if you drive over 60 km a day; not otherwise.

A separate EV meter is the single best financial move an EV owner can make. Most state discoms offer a lower EV tariff, which drops running cost to around ₹0.65–0.90 per km. Application processes vary by state, and it typically takes a few weeks.

Charging in an apartment

This is where most Indian EV buyers actually get stuck, and it is a society-politics problem more than a technical one. What works:

  • The Model Building Bye-Laws already require new buildings to provision EV charging, and most state EV policies direct societies to permit installation. Take the text to your RWA meeting.
  • Ask for a dedicated meter to your parking slot, billed to you directly. This removes the "who pays for the electricity" objection, which is usually the real one.
  • A 15A socket at your slot is far easier to get approved than a wall box, and it is enough for overnight charging.
  • Several state discoms will install a separate EV connection in a society parking area on request.

Public charging in India, honestly

The network has grown quickly along major highways and inside metros, and it is genuinely usable on the Delhi–Jaipur, Mumbai–Pune and Bengaluru–Chennai corridors. Away from those, coverage is thin and reliability is inconsistent — broken units and occupied bays are normal.

Plan long drives around two chargers, not one. Treat the second as the actual plan.

The question that decides it

Can you charge where you park overnight? If yes, an EV will cost you roughly a sixth of what petrol costs and you will rarely think about charging again. If no, you are signing up for a weekly trip to a public charger at roughly half the price of petrol, plus the time. That is a worse deal than most people realise before they buy.
