How to compare two electric cars properly

A spec table is only useful if you know which rows decide the outcome. Four numbers settle most EV comparisons in India, and they are not the four people usually argue about.

1. DC fast-charging time, not range

Range is the spec everyone compares and the one that matters least once you clear about 300 km, because almost nobody drives 300 km in a day. Charging time is what you actually live with. Among cars on sale today, 10–80% DC charging runs from roughly 20 minutes at the quick end to about an hour at the slow end, and a few models offer no DC fast charging at all — which makes them city cars whatever their range says. On a long drive, that difference is the whole trip.

2. Battery capacity, read carefully

Manufacturers quote either gross capacity or usable capacity, and rarely say which. The gap can be a couple of kilowatt-hours. If one car in your comparison looks unusually efficient on paper, check whether you are comparing a usable figure against a gross one. Capacity also tells you something range does not: a bigger battery costs more to charge from empty, so a long-range variant is not automatically cheaper to run per kilometre.

3. Claimed range versus what you will see

Every range figure here is the manufacturer’s claimed or certified number, published as claimed. In normal Indian conditions expect roughly 72–80% of it, and the lower end of that band with highway speeds and air conditioning. Our method for that estimate is published in full. The practical consequence: compare two cars at 72% of their claimed figures, not at 100%, because the gap between them usually holds but the absolute numbers do not.

4. Price, by variant

The prices shown are ex-showroom and span the variant range. Comparing the base variant of one car against the top variant of another is the most common way to reach a wrong conclusion. Match the trims — and remember that on-road cost adds registration, insurance and road tax, which several states waive for EVs, so two cars with the same ex-showroom price can differ by a lakh on the road depending on where you register.

What a comparison table cannot show you

A sensible way to use this tool

Shortlist with the EV finder, compare the two finalists here, then run both through the running-cost calculator at your own electricity tariff before you book a test drive. If you want the longer argument behind a specific pairing, the comparisons section covers the match-ups buyers ask about most, and the fastest-charging EVs list ranks the cars that take the least time at a DC charger.

Comparison FAQs

Which spec should I weight most heavily?

If you mostly drive in the city and can charge at home, charging speed barely matters and price and service reach decide it. If you drive highways regularly, DC fast-charging time is the single most important number on the page.

Are these specifications from the manufacturer?

Yes. Battery capacity, claimed range and charging times are as published by the manufacturer. We do not road-test vehicles and we publish no performance figures of our own.

Can I compare an electric car with a petrol car here?

Not in this tool — it compares EV against EV. For the petrol comparison, the running-cost calculator puts cost per kilometre side by side.

How often is the data updated?

Prices and specifications are updated as changes are confirmed. Always verify the final price with a dealer before committing.
